Places We Love: Vitek’s and Uncle Dan’s

While listing out all the local places I love, I came to an impasse: Vitek’s? or Uncle Dan’s? The question about whose barbecue is best surfaces occasionally, becomes a heated debate, and then disappears as the individuals become preoccupied with eating the barbecue of their choice.

On one hand, you have the tender, delicious brisket and ribs at Uncle Dan’s. Everything is cooked to perfection and the barbecue sauce rocks. On the other hand, you have the Gut Pak – the undisputed king of college eats – and all of Vitek’s fantastic homemade sausage. Aaron loves the sausage so much he drove out to Vitek’s to add it to his gumbo for family dinner.

We watched the Baylor-Wisconsin game on the Vitek's patio. Aaron refused to pretend to be happy.

How do I decide where to go? Honestly it just depends on which side of town I’m on. Is that a cop-out? Sort of. But I’m just a man who loves good food – something Vitek’s and Uncle Dan’s both have in spades.

Congratulations are in order…

There are so many exciting things happening in Waco and this past weekend we had even more reason to celebrate.

After battling through brackets and packing people’s guts with food, Vitek’s BBQ Gut Pack took the title as the Cooking Channel’s number one college eat! This is one of Leah’s good friend’s and personal favorites in town so we couldn’t be happier for them!

It was a great weekend for Baylor sports too! Women’s Tennis took down SFA after a doubleheader, defeating them 6-1. The 15th-ranked Men’s Tennis dominated the court as well this weekend as they blew past Texas Tech 6-1. What a great way to keep the Big 12 Tennis season going strong! We’ll be cheering them both on this week as they take on Oklahoma in a Big 12 showdown.

For those of you who have been experiencing football withdrawals, you don’t have to wait much longer! Baylor football took off this weekend with their spring scrimmage. The Bears had to fight through windy conditions, but still put on an impressive show. Junior quarterback Bryce Petty caught our eye with his near perfect performance and his positive attitude despite the bad weather. Needless to say, we can’t wait for the first home game on August 31!

So, we’d like to give one big CONGRATULATIONS to our Baylor Athletes and Vitek’s BBQ! What a great weekend it was!

Now, if you’re celebrating like us, you’ll need a delicious snack! Here’s a flashback to Leah’s recipe for Jalapeno Poppers. Follow this link for an easy recipe everyone loves! It’s a great treat to eat if you’re having people over, or if you’re going to watch the game at a friend’s house. Maybe you can make them this week for a Baylor Tennis watch party! Happy cooking!

Battle of the Best College Eats

Every March, we watch the madness of college basketball teams fight for the title as the #1 team in the nation (Even though Baylor Bears will always be our #1). This year, the Cooking Channel decided to have a little fun of their own by putting basketball aside and making food the real competitor. They’re putting some of the best foods from colleges across the country against each other to compete in their Bracket Battle: Best College Eats tournament to see wich college dish is the best. One of our personal favorites, and neighbors, even made the list–but of course, that was no surprise to us!

Mouth-watering Gut Packs from Vitek’s BBQ, right here in Waco, Texas is fighting for the #1 spot! Leah has been long-time friends with Julie Vitek, and through their Texas Restaurant Association meetings, they grew to know each other better and shared their love for food. It’s one of our favorite tailgating foods throughout all the Baylor Sports. No football game would be complete without a Vitek’s Gut Pack and a big glass of their sweet tea! But they continue to be our meal of choice during basketball halftimes, baseball’s 7th inning stretch or just on a sunny afternoon in Waco.

The mix of meats- the jalapeno sausage is delicious- BBQ sauce, fritos, cheese and beans is a southern favorite and leaves your stomach stuffed! We like to add onions, pickles, and jalapenos for an extra kick! Weather you’re a native of Waco, a Baylor student, or just passing through, you have to try this college dish!

Good luck to Vitek’s BBQ and the Vitek family! We’ll be cheering you on and voting you as our favorite college dish! To learn more, visit the Cooking Channel website and go vote!
